PC Geoff Younger - Steven Blakely
he arrived in 2004 and pretty soon everyone realised he was keen as mustard, wildly
ambitious, but dazzlingly naive. He loves being a policeman, and in occasional insightful moments he'd concede that he feels
immensely privileged and just plain lucky to be a constable. He's Miller's public whipping-boy, which makes us like him even
more. Alf, who feels he has been dealt with harshly by various sergeants over the years, sympathises with Younger, and offers
him advice from time to time. Younger has a crush on garage girl Rosie (Vanessa Hehir) and things finally look as if they
may change for the better in the romance department
Peggy
is David's aunt. When David's previous companion, Vernon Scripps "died",
Peggy arrived from Ilkley to look after him. That involved moving into David's house and not paying any rent. Though
Peggy came to Aidensfield to exploit David, to her surprise she discovered that she needed him as much as he clearly needed
her. And, as much as Peggy loves anyone now, she loves David. She has had many dubious enterprises but usually
falls back on poaching. Peggy is unscrupulous, devious, opportunistic and belligerent; she is almost feral. Miller, Blaketon
and Rosie dislike her; Gina and Bernie only just tolerate her. But she is quick-thinking and resourceful, clever and inventive;
she has an abrasive honesty, and little vanity. In a jam, she's usually a good person to have on your side.
DAVID STOCKWELL
David has been in the series for a long time but only more recently as a regular character.
David who has lived with his mother for years is a man who has a kind heart and would do anything for anyone, but is known
to be a bit slow or uneducated of which a lot of people tend to take advantage Before long Claude takes him under his wing
and looks after him to a certain extent by giving him a job and involving him in his interests - whether that be a good or
bad thing! The locals all love David and know how sensitive and vulnerable he is, so they usually tread carefully. However
David is not daft and is always sure of his facts, especially when he has witnessed an incident which has happened recently
with a hit and run. David is fine until people either deliberately try to confuse him or lead him down the wrong track
Alf Ventris
Alf is the oldest member
of the Police team. Alf’s only ambition from now on is to sit back, wait for his retirement, eating from his lunch
box munching away at a lunch that always includes two hard- boiled eggs or smoking secretively, or in his police
car and do as little physical activity as possible!. . He also readily knows about local characters and events from years
before.
Sergeant Oscar Blaketon
He is the crusty sergeant in
charge of Ashfordly Police Station. His commitment to policing was to the detriment of his marriage, and he has a son Graham
who lives with the former Mrs Blaketon. Blaketon has a kind heart, which he doesn't often allow to show. He is obsessed with getting Claude Greengrass convicted, although this has not been played up so much in later series. In his spare time, Blaketon loves to play golf. He worries about his age, and what he will do in retirement, particularly
if he is forced to retire soon. A threat to his career in Season 7 may cause some upheavals; Oscar Blaketon had to give up
his job as sergent and retire after he failed a medical. After his retiement he ran the local post office for a short while
before joining Gina in running the pub
Bernie scripts
Bernie joins the programme in series 5 as a mechanic/funeral director who runs the garage
formally known as Mostyns Garage (run by Malcom). He often acts as Greengrass’ side kick and ends up involved in his
schemes even if he doesn’t know it at the time! A lot of the scrapes that Bernie gets into with the local police are
generally down to Greengrass,. Although Bernie never says no to making a bit of money on the side, but if possible he prefers
to stay on the right side of the law. Despite everything he does remain friends with Claude although sometimes he wonders
why. Bernie gives the impression that he’s more in favour of a calm, quiet life which is slow and uneventful - but living
in Aidensfield this is rarely the case! but just recently is being overshaddowed by his older brother Vernon
He had rosy cartwright helping him in the garage who left for a tour of the country on a motobike
Gina Ward is played by Tricia Penrose
Gina is landlady of the Aidensfield Arms. She is in her early thirties, extremely fashion-conscious, and well able to
take care of herself. She first came to Aidensfield from Liverpool several years ago, as a condition of her probation. Following
a tempestuous few years at home, culminating in pleading guilty to handling stolen goods (with a suspicion that many other
offences should have been taken into consideration), Liverpool probation officers finally agreed that she should be sent out
of temptation's way, to work for her uncle George, who was landlord of the Aidensfield Arms. When he fell seriously ill, Gina
took over the running of the pub and was eventually granted the license when he died.
Gina tolerates Blaketon’s
meddling in the day-to-day affairs of the pub, but is not beyond laying down the law if she thinks he’s gone too far.
gina has slowly come to terms with phils death and found out she is pregnant she has a watchful eye over
the new Dawn Bellamy (Nikki Sanderson). who come to stay
Lord Ashfordly is played by Rupert Vansittart
An occasional visitor to the series, Lord Ashfordly is the overfed aristocrat we love to hate. He is a constant thorn
in the police’s side, insisting on preferential treatment while maintaining a snooty contempt for their abilities.
However, he does on occasion reveal a sensitivity that belies his blustering exterior,
as in Series IX when he had an affair with a married headmistress, and he can also show a remarkably astute awareness of how
the local community works.
PC Joe Mason
is from York, but originally hails from Scotland. Born and
brought up in Glasgow, he lived there happily with his parents and siblings until a family tragedy forced the relocation to
Yorkshire.. Like Sergeant Miller, PC Mason would never rest until he got his man. When Miller was nudged out of York, to a
provincial posting, Joe found himself somewhat isolated by elements of senior management. His no-nonsense approach, combined
with a high law enforcement rate, was seen as threatening by some, and Joe was kept squarely on the fringes of the junior
ranks.
Sgt George Miller - John Dutting
Sergeant Miller rules the Ashfordly police station with a rod of iron although he
will give the benefit of the doubt to transgressors. That's true in PC Mason's case, mainly because he can't prove he
committed an offence. Joe quickly provokes his disapproval although he can see huge potential in the new recruit. But rules
are rules and they must be obeyed by his men as well as the locals.
A tough, suspicious and unforgiving man, Miller's
attitudes were forged by army discipline and over 20 years' service in the roughhouse of the City of York Constabulary. He
is politically astute, and therefore not inflexible. He wants results, and despite his regular clashes with Rob he understands
that the junior officer achieves them. He is a private man who rarely refers to his close and warm family background,
but occasionally lets down his guard to reveal the human being inside.
